The effect of low temperature stress on physiological characteristics of Magnolia wufengensis seedlings under the dark and light conditions was studied by taking the normal seedling grew at 25℃ as the control. The results showed:the plasma membrane relative permeability increased, the contents of soluble sugar and proline increased, and those with illumination treatment were higher than those with the dark treatment.Nevertheless the content of soluble protein decreased, those with illumination treatment were lower than those with the dark treatment;the activity of SOD increased, and those with illumination treatment were higher than those with the dark treatment; The activity of POD increased by a small amount with illumination treatment, the activity of POD was lower than that of the control with dark treatment. The increases of the contents of soluble sugar, proline and the activity of SOD might play an important role in chilling resistance system of the plant.
