时间的空间隐喻与英语时态委婉的机制

摘 要：
过去时态类委婉语是通过运用动词的过去时态构成的。过去时态是距离性的。时间的概念化是通过空间概念隐喻等实现的。人际关系也是通过空间概念隐喻来认知和理解的。过去时态的距离和人际关系的距离相对应,可表示委婉,同时表示关系的疏远。而人际关系的疏远和礼貌只是表面的矛盾,实质是一致的。答案在于心理领土对人际关系的影响:亲近则随便,尊敬则远之。为了不冒犯别人的心理领土,讲话者就要采取语用策略拉大和对方的心理距离。这就是过去时态委婉用法的工作机制。

摘 要：
Past-tense euphemisms are constructed with the past tense,which is used non-deictically.Past tense entails distance.The conceptualization of time is realized by using spatial conceptual metaphors.This is the same with the inter-personal relationship.There is a correspondence between the past-tense distance and the inter-personal relationship distance: politeness means distant inter-personal relationship.The two are consistent with each other though it seems a contradiction.The key lies in the Mental Territory: closeness means casualness and politeness entails remoteness.In order not to offend addressee's Mental Territory the addresser should take pragmatic tactics to widen the mental distance from the latter.And this is the very working mechanism of past-tense euphemisms.
