The thoracic regions, where the imagine wing discs are located and to which the hemopoietic organs are attached,of third day silkworm larvae in fifth instar were locally irradiated with ion beam ( 12 C 5+ and 4He 2+ ).The hemocyte density and hemocyte type in larva, and development and metamorphosis of larvae and pupae were observed. The irradiated silkworms showed difficulty in their metamorphosis, and to be markedly lowered in cocooning rate, pupation rate and eclosion rate.Compared to the control, the hemocyte density in irradiated silkworms were found to be significantly higher during 8~24 hours after irradiation, then decreased quickly and to be significantly low during the late stages of 5th instar. With the dose of irradiation ions beam being increased, the adove mentioned changes could become strong. There were no marked difference between the effects of 12 C 5+ and 4He 2+ on above mentioned phenomena.A big type of hemocyte was found in irradiated larvae, although the established types of hemocyte and their ratio had not changed.
