A survey on the zinc contents in tea leaves and plantation soil was conducted in Datian county to determine the factors affecting the presence of the mineral. Twenty-five samples of soil as well as tea leaves(1-bud-2-leaves)from the bushes grown on the same lot were collected for analysis. The results showed that the total zinc in soils ranged from 60. 1 to 210. 0 mg · kg~(-1) with a mean of 106. 1 mg · kg~(-1), which was significantly higher than 87. 7 mg · kg~(-1) for the provincial average. The available zinc in soil were 0. 8 ~10. 9 mg · kg~(-1) with a mean of 3. 8 mg · kg~(-1). There were approximately 20% soil samples that had a zinc concentration lower than the critical 2. 0 mg · kg~(-1) set for tea plantations. The zinc activating rates at the tested areas ranged from 1. 1 % to 5. 7% with a mean of 3. 7%. In the tea leaves, the zinc contents were 60. 0 to 96. 1 mg · kg~(-1) with a mean of 73. 0 mg · kg~(-1). It was significantly higher than that of the major teas in China, which is 40. 6 mg · kg~(-1). Thus, the teas sampled were considered zinc-rich by the national standard. There was a significant correlation between the contents of total zinc and available zinc in the soil samples. The zinc accumulation coefficient in tea leaves and the total and available zinc in the corresponding soil were significantly inversely correlated, but not significantly correlated with other soil physical and chemical properties. The plantation soil in the county appeared relatively rich in total and available zinc which represented a potential for developing zinc-rich functional tea products for the industry in Datian.
