The horizontal and vertical distribution features of six kinds of heavy metal elements in the sediments of five national controlling sections of Weihei river in Shanxi province had been investigated, which were cadmium(Cd),lead(Pb),zinc(Zn),chromium(Cr),Nickel(Ni) and copper(Cu).The results demonstrated that there were highly significant variations among different sampling stations for the concentrations of tested metals. There appeared obvious Zn and Pb enrichment in sediment in all the studied area.Cd was found enrichment in one section.Concentration of Cu had close relationship with that of Pb,Cr,Ni and Zn.In addition, organic matter in sediment had significant effect on concentration of most metal except Cd.The substantial ecological risks of metals in sediment of the researched area had been evaluated by Hakanson index method. The results indicated that Cd in one section had middle level ecological risk while in other sections the ecological risks were considerable low.
