Remediation of the soils contaminated by heavy metal has been a worldwide urgent issue.Phytoremediation an environmental friendly and in-situ remediation technique for heavy metal contaminated soils,is being a focus in soil remediation research. However, most of the hyperaccumulators for phytoremediation found so far grow slowly, have low biomass and generally accumulate only one specific element. These drawbacks restrict greatly the further use of the phytoremediation technology for in-situ remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils especially the compound heavy metals contaminated soils. The combined phytoremediation that use high biomass and fast-growing plants associated with other technology has been proposed as an effective alternative for remediation of contaminated soils and is becoming a research focus recently, for example, the chelate-enhanced phytoremediation has been concerned widely. In this paper, the research advances on the chelate-enhanced phytoremediation, the remediation mechanism and the existed problems in recent research were reviewed, and the future research directions of the chelate-enhanced phytoremediation were previewed.
