科技英语(English for Science and Technology,简称EST)是近十几年来随着社会语言学理论和实践的发展而新兴起来的专用英语(English for Spe-cial Purposes,简称ESP)下属的一个重要分支,其实它早就存在,它指的就是用于表达科学技术内容的英语.该文试就科技英语词汇的特点、科技英语词汇的产生以及科技英语词汇的多义、同义现象等方面作一些尝试性的探讨,希望能对公共英语教学和阅读原文专业文献、科技书刊有所裨益.

摘  要：
English for Science and Technology (EST) is an important branch of English for Special Purposes (ESP) which has emerged with the development of theory and practice of social linguistics in recent years. In fact, EST has existed for many, many years. It is simply English used by those engaged in science and technology. Today it has succeeded as a new branch of language just because EST has its own characteristics in the vocabulary, the grammar and the rhetoric. This article defines the scope of the vocabulary for EST. The vocabulary's features are described in Section 2. The third section traces the origin of the scientific and technological vocabulary. Section 4 discusses polysemy and synonymy of the words scientists and technologists use. It is hoped that this paper will be of interest for purposes of reading and translating sceientific and technical literature, and also useful for the polytechnieal college English teachers and researchers.
