Paeonia ostii is an important ornamental, medicinal and oilseed plant. This study was conducted to test how three crop byproducts i.e. peanut shell, corn cob and camphor leaves as substrate materials with perlite as filling material at different volume proportions affected the growth of Paeonia ostii in a pot culture. The results show that when the volume proportions of corn cob:peanut shell:camphor leaves:perlite was1:1:1:2, peanut shell:perliet was 1:1 and 1:3, the substrates at the three proportions were obviously superior in the vegetative growth of Paeonia ostii to those of the other volume proportions, and more suitably used at the growth stage of Paeonia ostii seedlings in the pot culture; when the volume proportions of corn cob: peanut shell: perlite was 1: 2: 1, corn cob:peanut shell:camphor leaves:perlite was1:2:1:1, and corn cob:peanut shell: perlite was 2:1:1, the substrates at the three proportions were better in the effect of fi rst fl owering than those of the other volume proportions, and better used at the development stage of Paeonia ostii plants in the pot culture.
