The leaf epidermal micromorphology of 12 species in the genus Lespedeza was observed by optical microscope. The results showed that the shape of leaf epidermal cells had 3 types, irregular, rectangular or both. The anticlinal walls had 4 types, sinuolate, sinuate, straight-blow, both sinuolate and straight-blow. 12 species in the genus Lespedeza could be classified into 5 categories according to the shape of leaf epidermal cells and the anticlinal walls. Stomatal apparatus generally existed on the lower epidermis of all the species examined and on the upper epidermis of most species, and were assigned to anomocytic, anisocytic and paracytic types, but mainly in paracytic. The ratio of stomatal orgen length to width of 12 species of Lespedeza was between 1.26 and 2.11, and the difference of stomatal long axis between Lespedeza buergeri and Lespedeza virgate was the most significant. The density of the stomata was 23.7~1135.5/mm~2. The stomatal index was 1.5%~25.7%, which has the significant difference among the species. The length and density of the trichomes varied with the species and presented in the lower epidermis and the upper epidermis of most species. The leaf epidermal micromorphology characteristics are morphological response of Lespedeza plant to the different ecological environments, and can be used as the basis for interspecific taxonomy of some species of Lespedeza.
