The physi-chemical properties of substrate influenced absorption of nutrition and water, and rhizotzxy growth. So, substrate was the most principal factor effect on growth environment of plant rhizos-phere in soilless culture. In this article, the 2 kinds of compound substrates, which were made from indifferent material and organic compost, were planted cucumber in greenhouse, with the control of perlite. The physi-chemical properties and effect of the substrates were evaluated with the criteria of structure, water and nutrient absorption, index of water constants, yield, cost, and benifit. Results showed that physi-chemical properties of substrate No. 2 were suitable for plant roots growth. It could absorb more nutrients than that of perlite, and had high water efficiency for plant using. The cucumber yield and benifit are also enhanced to the degree of 22.6% and 20.9% respectively.
