Combining the spatial characteristics of Chinese classical gardens, Taoist thoughts are studied from the inherent purpose of classical gardening of ′the unity of nature and man, nature and inaction′, the garden space formed by ′the concealment of virtuality and reality′, and the garden artistic conception generated by ′nothingness′. The expression of ′nothingness′ in the space of Chinese classical gardens explains that the gardening purpose of Chinese classical gardens ′although it is made by man, it is open to nature′ is derived from the philosophical thinking of ′the unity of nature and man, nature and nothingness′ in Taoist culture; as the leading factor in gardening, the method of borrowing scenery is in the same line as Taoism′s ′existence and non-existence, combination of virtual and real′. Under the influence of the Taoist philosophy of ′Nothingness′, the artistic conception of Chinese classical gardens has continued to develop, forming a freehand Chinese classical garden style.
