The present study aims to investigate the effect of hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis on gamecock aggressive behavior. The hypothalamus of Turpan gamecocks and New Roman layers at different growth stages were extracted, respectively. The numbers of thyrotropinreleasing hormone(TRH) positive neurons were detected by immunohistochemistry method.ELISA was used to measure the concentrations of TRH and thyroid hormone(TH) in serum at different weeks during cockfight and layer rooster attacking before, during and after each period. The results showed that the number of TRH-positive cells in the hypothalamus was decreased with ages, and Turpan gamecock exhibited slightly higher number of TRH-positive cells than New Roman layers. In the two species of chickens, serum concentrations of TRH increased gradually while TH level decreased.Serum TRH and TH concentrations were higher in Turpan rooster than that of gamecock rooster. However, the fighting duration of gamecock rooster is longer than that of New Roman rooster. Therefore,it is reasonable to speculate that the strong aggressive behavior of Turpan gamecock may be related to the high levels of TRH and TH in the circulating system.
