Mount Taipai is 4000 meters above the sea level. It is the highest peak of theChinling Mountain Range, that runs transversely through the central part of China. Tem-perature, humidity and plant cover change greatly from the foot to the summit with thegradual increase of altitude. This is the reason why the insect fauna of Taipai Moun-tain is so rich and colorful in the different zones according to altitude. In the summer of 1958, we collected from this area 780 specimens of butterflies, belonging to 6 families and including 44 genera and 98 species. They are: Papilionidae,5 genera, 8 species; Pieridae, 7 genera, 19 species; Nymphalidae, 12 genera, 35 species;Satyridae, 9 genera, 18 species; Lycaenidae, 7 genera, 7 species; Riodinidae, 1 genus, 1species; Hesperiidae, 8 genera, 10 species. All the species of Papilionidae are distributed lower than 2500 meters above thesea level, except the genus Parnassius that exists higher than 3000 meters. The genusSericenus is only limited to the foot of this mountain. With the exception of Colias montium, that is distributed about 2200--3700 meters, the other species of Pieridae are found lower than 3200 meters. Leptidia and Euremaare never found above 1500 meters. Many species of the families Nymphalidae and Satyridae are distributed below 2500meters, and only the members of Bolorina and Erebid are distributed from the heightof 2500 meters up to the very summit (4000 meters). We collected only a few specimens of Lycaenidae, Riodinidae and Hesperiidae, andconsequently cannot see the regularities of their distribution. The principal species found at the foot of the maintain are Sericenus telamon,Coliaskyale, Leptidia spp. The dominant species of Quercus-zone are Apolia hippa, Arge sp.,Minois dryas. The dominant species of Betula-zone are Byasa spp., Zopkoessa arman-dina. The species that rule the zone of Rhododendron (above 3200 meters) are Bolorinaspp. and Erebia spp. In the present paper we have described in brief the characters of the butterflies wecollected, and their vertical distribution on Mount Taipai.
