The present paper is the first report on the study of wheat-blossom midge,Sitodiplosis mosellana (Gehin), in the suburbs of Shanghai. It gives the results ofsoil and wheat ear samplings in 1953. Much attention has been paid to the life ofthis midge in the soil which has not yet been much understood. The underground situation of this midge was studied by soil sampling at regularintervals. The larvae enter the soil within the range of about 14 cm. in depth, andmost of them stay in the upper half of this depth. Therein they curl up and each of themis then tightly enveloped in a cocoon which is spherical in shape and about 1 mm.in diameter. Those larvae enclosed in spherical cocoons are, apparently in diapausestate. At the advent of the spring, they leave the cocoons and move upwards in thesoil. They form a second type of cocoon before pupation. This cocoon is elongatein shape, about 2 mm. in length. The larva at this stage remains straight in thecocoon which now gives more space. Pupation takes place, as a rule, in such elongatedcocoon. The individuals parasitized by hymenopterous insects are also observed informing elongated cocoons. The site of egg-laying by female midges was studied by means of wheat earsampling. The upper and the middle portions of the ear appeared to be preferredfor egg-laying to the basal one.
