Colletes gigas is one of the major pollinators for Camellia oleifera Abel in Jiangxi,Hunan,Guangdong Province and other areas of southern China. Observations and studies on morphology, life history, behaviors and other biological features of C. gigas were carried out in Xinyu city,Jiangxi Province and other areas of Southern China from 2011 to 2014. The results showed that C. gigas has one generation each year. The adults begin to emerge from nests in the mid November. Males emerge 5 days earlier than females and die after copulation. The life- span of a male is about 25 days and a female is about 45 days. The oviposition period of a female is about 9 days and the larval period is about 35 days. When bee bread is exhausted, the larva enters mature larvae stage which is about 230 days called diapause. The mature larva will pupate in mid October of the next year and its pupal period is about 35 days. The newly- emerged female would copulate with a male on the same day. After copulation, the female will nest near its eclosion site and collect the pollen and nectar of C. oleifera into a premade cellophane- like egg- chamber. These collections will be made into paste- like bee bread and then one or occasionally two eggs will be laid on bee bread in each egg- chamber.
