In order to explore the direct and indirect effects of biochar on plant growth under water shortage condition, the growth indicators of ryegrass(Lolium perenne L.) and the physical and chemical properties of the soil were observed by controlling different addition of biochar and precipitation. The results showed that the addition of biochar could increase the field water holding capacity of the soil, the content of available phosphorus and soil pH. Under drought conditions, increasing the amount of biochar increased the height of ryegrass plants, but high-dose of biochars inhibited the growth of ryegrass. The addition of biochar could not maintain soil moisture, high concentration(> 15%) of biochar even increased the loss of soil moisture, but because of the potassium in biochar, it could provide the necessary nutrient for ryegrass to fight against the drought condition. Our results showed that appropriate addition of biochar(5%) could alleviate the inhibition of the growth and development of ryegrass in the absence of water, and promote their root growth and ensure a higher germination rate. In a word, the addition of biochar to the soil could promote plant growth under drought conditions and help alleviate the effects of drought stress on plants.
