The aims of the study were to investigate the effects of male/female ratio on production performance, blood biochemical indicators, feather condition and antibody level of layer breeders in mating cages. A total number of1 500 27-week-age Hy-Line brown parent stock breeders were reared in enclosed layer breeder house installed natural mating cages with four overlap tiers. All birds were randomly divided into five equal groups according to the male/female ratio and each group contained 3 cages. These included 11∶89(group 1), 10∶90(group 2), 9∶91(group 3), 8∶92(group 4), 7∶93(group 5) with each group per 3 cages. Production performances, blood biochemical indicators, feather condition and antibody level were measured during the studied period. The results showed that the male/female ratio had a significant effect on laying rate, especially that group 2 exhibited the highest egg-laying rate among all groups, but had no significant effects on other performances including mortality, the percentage of defective eggs, hatching performances, egg quality(except that yolk color was significantly lower in group 2 than other groups), blood biochemical indicators, feather condition and antibody level. The results suggested that the best male-female ratio of Hy-Line brown parent stock breeders was 1∶9 during peak production period.
