Study on the effects of urban sludge fertilizer on the growth and physiological characteristics of three landscape plants of Ligustrum vicaryi, Buxus sinica, Berberis thunbergii cv. atropurpurea, a pot experiment was set up with three sludge applied ratio: low levels 10%(T1), medium 30%(T2)and high amount 50%(T3), and with no applied sludge as control(CK). Different sludge treatment was carried out to the three plants. The results showed that the tolerance ability of the three landscape greening plants was different based on the sludge content. Ligustrum vicaryi grew better with the increase of sludge applied. Buxus sinica growth was inhibited under T3 treatment, but improved under T2 and T2 treatments. Berberis thunbergii cv. atropurpurea had a better growth under T1, but a weak growth under T2 and T3. Control with the CK treatment, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents increased with the increasing of applying sludge content, net photosynthesis ratio also increased. The nutrient uptake under the four treatments were different, especially a high concentration under sludge applied treatment. Among a certain range, the sludge could be used as a fertilizer for greening plant cultivation, provide nutrients for plants and promot its growth. Ligustrum vicaryi tolerance ability to sludge was higher, the suitable sludge applied amount for Buxus sinica was 30%, while 10% for Berberis thunbergii cv. atropurpurea.
