Variation in perianth structure during the blooming of Michelia alba DC. was observed by means of light microscope and scanning electronic microscope, the structures were compared between perianth and leaf in details, and some quantitative features in leaves and perianths were measured to explore structure base of aroma production, emission pattern and sites in Michelia alba DC.. The grain-like cell inclusions which varied in morphology, location and number during the different periods of unfolding of perianths of Michelia alba DC. can be inferred to be a predecessor of aroma. Difference between the perianth and mature leaf in anatomic structure indicated they had different aroma emission mechanisms. Predecessor of aroma was produced in basic parenchyma cells of perianth, transported to epidermis cells through dispersion and then emitted from the intercelluar space, anticlinal wall and stomata of epidermis cells.
