Through delayed feeding to the newly exuviated silkworm( Bombyx mori) larvae of the 4 th and 5 th instars, and through starvation treatment to day 3 larvae of the 5 th instar, the impact of starvation on silkworm growth, development and the performance of cocooning and laying eggs was investigated, which was aimed to provide experimental references for establishing new technological criteria of cooperative silkworm rearing and of moth emergence regulation in F1 hybrid egg production. It was found that an 8 h delay in feeding the newly exuviated larvae of the 4 th instar had no adverse effect on duration of the 5 th instar, cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell rate, pupa weight, moth eclosion rate, number of laid eggs, and good egg rate. A 16 h and 24 h delay in feeding the newly exuviated larvae of the 4 th instar led to prolonged duration of the 5 th instar and significant declines in mature larva weight, cocoonweight, and pupa weight of the female silkworm( P < 0. 05),while the same treatment had less effect on those of male silkworm( P > 0. 05). An 8 h,16 h and 24 h delay in feeding the newly exuviated larvae of the 5 th instar led to prolonged duration of the 5 th instar and extremely significant declines in mature larva weight, cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, pupa weight, number of laid eggs, and number of good eggs( P <0. 01). After day 3 larvae of the 5 th instar were starved for 12 h and 24 h, mature larva weight, cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight and pupa weight all dropped extremely significantly( P < 0. 01). The larvae under severe starvation treatment( 48 h) had extremely significantly lowered cocooning rate( P < 0. 01),which was 60. 67 % and 42. 66 % from the female and male larvae respectively. Based on these results,it is suggested that,if a centralized cooperative rearing pattern is adopted to supply the 4 th instar larvae for farmers,a less than 8 h delay in feeding the newly exuviated larvae of the 4 th instar is appropriate for the convenience of distributing and dispatching the cooperatively reared silkworm larvae. In F1 hybrid egg production,an 8 ~ 16 h delay in feeding the newly exuviated larvae of the 4 th instar is appropriate for adjustment of developmental status of the crossing varieties. In rearing silkworm for both cocoon and egg productions, sufficient mulberry leaf supply should be schedule in advance to prevent the 5 th instar vigorously growing larvae from undergoing any starvation.
