[Objective]The present study was conducted to explore the effects of black and white film on the growth and development, and yield of sweet potato in order to provide guidance for practical production. [Method]The experiment was carried out from March to October 2011 at Zhanjie Town, Qingzhen City of Guizhou Province. Three treatments (black film mulching, white film mulching, and control) were arranged in randomized block design with four replications to compare their effects on growth, development, and yield of sweet potato. [Result]Compared with control, black film mulching treatment increased the yields of aboveground part and underground part of sweet potato by 202% and 79%, respectively, while white film mulching treatment increased the yields of aboveground part and underground part of sweet potato by 185% and 50%,,respectively. Black film mulching increased the yields of aboveground part and underground part by 6% and 19.6%, respectively compared to white film mulching treatment. Dry matter ratio did not change significantly under different film mulching conditions, the T/R ratio decreased whether the film was covered or not. The growth rate of fresh weight at early stage under black film mulching was higher than those of white film mulching and the control. [Conclusion] Film mulching could obviously increase the fresh weight of leaves, petioles, stems, and tubers, especially black film mulching, which increased tuber yield by 79%. Film mulching is a technological measure with low investment and high benefits, which could be widely applied in sweet potato production.
