It is of great significance to improve the reproductive performance of sheep and reveal its molecular mechanism to research the genes affecting sheep fecundity. The largest subfamily of the transforming growth factor-β(TGF-β) superfamily is bone morphogenetic proteins(BMPs), which are closely related to mammalian reproductive activities. BMPs can promote the transformation of primordial follicles into secondary follicles, and play an important role in regulating mammalian ovarian granulosa cell proliferation, synthesis and secretion of reproductive hormones, and oocyte maturation and ovulation. While BMPs function mainly depending on the classical Bmp/Smad signaling pathway. This review summarizes the expression of the Bmp/Smad signaling pathway members, effects on early embryo development, and their role in mammalian ovarian development, which will provide a useful reference for further study of its regulatory functions.
