Leaching ability of pesticide is necessary when registered. Humic acid (HA) is an important organic ingredient of soil and a most important factor affecting the leaching ability of pesticide in soil. Adsorption of herbicide ethametsulfuron-methyl on HA and the effect of adding HA to red soil on the leaching of ethametsulfuron-methyl in the red soil were studied. The results showed that the adsorption of herbicide ethametsulfuron-methyl on HA was strong, with the adsorption constant (Kf) 2 675.3. Ethametsulfuron-methyl was mainly distributed in the upper layer soil with added HA,little in the mid-layer,and very little in the bottom, and the amount of ethamertsulfuron-methyl in leachate greatly reduced compared with that in the control. Adding HA to red soil remarkably restrained the ability of leaching and mobilizing of the herbicide. FT-IR (fourier transform infrared) spectra of ethametsulfuron-methyl and HA showed that co-adsorption happened between thametsulfuron-methyl and HA,i.e. they formed the compound of ethametsulfuron-methyl -HA.
