People around the world were much taken with cranes because of their profound cultural details and important ecological value. Cranes are well represented in China with 9 of the total 15 global species recorded in China and 6 species breeding here. Songnen Plain is an important international habitat with records of 7 species, including Siberian crane, the only Critically Endangered crane species. Also recorded are red-crowned crane, which is Endangered and has a long history in China, white-naped crane and hooded crane( Vulnerable), common crane and demoiselle crane( Least Concern), and occasionally sandhill crane( Least Concern). Songnen Plain plays an important role in the protection of cranes. We analyzed approaches to the study of cranes on the Songnen Plain in an effort to use the outcomes of research on cranes as a basis for identifying future research directions and strategies for protection of cranes here. We reviewed literature on the Songnen Plain and analyzed the research progress on many aspects of crane ecology and conservation. Based on this review, we offer here recommendations for future research on crane conservation.
