Several crosses were made between varieties of G.hirsutum and G.barbadense in order to improve the fiber strength of upland var- ieties.Jin-Mian-2,Jin-71-22,stoneville 2B and Xu-zhou-287 were used as the femate parents and Losaia-1 and Giga 67 were used as the male parents.Some of the Fo seeds were radiated with 20KR of γ rays while some F1 were backcrossed to upland varieties Xin-Jiang big ball and Xing-Tai-6871 as the male parents in the next year.Plant selections were made subsequently from 1975 through 1980. Segregation or variation of characters occurred yearly in all the progenies.Selection was effective.Till 1980,plant type,leaf shape, boll shape and maturaty have turned consistent within plot gradually, but some other economic characters remain varying to some extent. A large number of the selctions the fiber properties of their sea-island parents while their yield component somewhat restored as those of their upland parents.Thus,genetic advanceswere resulted for all of the main economic traits.In 1980,a lot of promising selections were examined among which the line"6020"was considered the best for it has the lint length of 37mm,fiber fineness 7170 m/g and fiber strength T1 31, 37 g/tex,while those of the control,Lou-Mian-1,were 30.6 mm,5600 m/g,and 20.4 g/tex resqectively.Yield componets of line"6020"were thus:number of fruits per plant 18.9,boll weight 5.6g and lint percentage 36.2%,while those of Lou-Mian-1 were 19.5,5.2g and 36.5% respectively. The reasons for longterm segregation or variation of characters were also discussed.
