In 1979,Lou Mian-1,an early, profilic cotton variety with poor fiber strength, was crossed with Acala si-3,a late, big boll cotton variety with high fiber strength. The F_1 plants were backcrossed to both of their parents in 1980,and in 1981 experiment was conducted in which six generations(P_1,P_2,F_1,F_2,B_1 and B_2)were included in a randomized block design with four replicates,Boll number, seedcotton yield, lint yield, boll weight, seeds per boll, lint percentage, lint index, seed index, fiber length, fineness and fiber strength were examined and recorded at plant base.A total numbr of 48 plants were contained in each of the P_1,P_2 and F_1 generation, while for each of the F_2,B_1 and B_2 generation 96 plants were included.Data analyzed exhibit that most of the yields and their components for F_1,F_2,B_1 and B_2 generations had significant heterosis.Heterosis for fiber length was significant only in F_1 and F_2 generations,a negative heterosis occurred for finenss in F_1.No heterosis for fiber strength.Analysis of the gene effects revealed that all the traits, except seeds per boll, were additive in nature, dominant gene effects existed in seed index, seeds per boll and fineness.Additivex dominant gene effect responsible for the hetorosis of yield.Recombination occurred enough between traits for yilld and fiber strength and no linkage of those parental chara- cters was observed.Ten high yield plants from each of the segregating generations were grown the next year for progeny test.It was seen that heterosis suddenly dropped in each of the generations. The implications of the results for cotton breeding were discussed.
