In order to discuss the habitat selection and spatial utilization patterns of wintering Chinese Mergansers(Mergus squamatus), we conducted field trips in four of the wintering regions for this species in Jiangxi Province, measuring eight related environmental factors including width, canopy covers, quantity of gravel bars, etc. The habitat characteristics were analyzed by corresponding statistics analysis methods such as principal component analysis; utilized and unutilized micro habitats were tested by non-parametric tests; relations between the observed variables and individual numbers were measured by correlation analysis; and the spatial pattern of the micro habitats on utilized habitats were also analyzed. The micro habitat combinations of M. squamatus presented regularity and obvious spatial pattern. Flow velocity and transparency of rivers, canopy covers, vegetation coverage, and quantity of gravel bars were the major factors influencing habitat selection and utilization of M. squamatus. Among the aforementioned factors, gravel bar plays the key role in influencing habitat selection, utilization, and quantity distribution.
