[Objective]Cold resistances of five common Camellia sasanqua Thunb.varieties were determined in the present experiment in order to provide scientific references for extension of Camellia sasanqua Thunb.in northern areas of Yangtze River.[Method]Five Camellia sasanqua Thunb.varieties,viz.,Kanjiro,Asakura,Showa-no-sakae,Azuma-botan and Egao, which were the most common ornamental trees in Hangzhou City, were used as experimental materials.Their relative conductivities were determined under the low temperature conditions in winter and the semi-lethal temperature was also determined after occurrence of chilling injury.[Result]The relative conductivity of the five C.sasanqua varieties increased initially and then decreased with decreasing outside temperature, and the semi-lethal temperature was recorded between-21 and-14℃.[Conclusion]All the five C.sasanqua varieties were found to have good adaptability to low temperature conditions and with certain degree of cold resistance.
