In this study the growth and slaughter performance of Peking Ducks was investigated by adding different proportions of chitosan in feed. Eight hundred 10-day-old Peking Ducks were selectedand randomly divided into four groups. Each group was divided into four replicates, and each repeated group had 50 of the 10-day-old Peking Ducks( half male and half female). The experimental groups were fed with the basic diet added with 0. 5%,1. 0% and 2. 0% of chitosan, and without any antibiotic. The control groups were fed with the basic diet added by 0. 02% zinc bacitracin polypeptide antibiotics. Free food, drinking water, natural light and cage were used in the whole experiment. The added chitosan and antibiotic effect were compared through detecting the body weight, feed intake, feed meat ratio, survival ratio and slaughtering performance of Peking ducks. Thus, the appropriate proportion of chitosan in feed was screened out. The experimental results were as follows: there was no significant difference in body weight between the experimental groups and the control group( P > 0. 05),while compared with the experimental group, the ratio of feed to meat was significantly higher than that of the control group( P < 0. 05). However, the survival rate of the control group was lower than those of the experimental groups and the control group had significant improvement on feed efficiency( P < 0. 05).On the slaughter ratio, half eviscerated ratio, eviscerated ratio and chest ratio, there were no significant difference among the groups( P > 0. 05). The luminance value, red value and yellow value also were not significantly different( P > 0. 05),and there was no obvious difference on the surface of the meat sensory quality. These findings suggest that the addition of chitosan in feed can also obtain the similar effect as antibiotics in feed on the growth performance and slaughter performance. Among them, the effect of adding 1. 0% chitosan in feed is relatively good, which can be used as an alternative to addition of antibiotics in feed. This study provides a theoretical basis for the feed adding with chitosan instead of antibiotics.
