A preliminary study was done on the water and nutrient management of 3vegetable crops under modern greenhouse cultivation. The nutrient demands of cucumber, tomato and sweet pepper are quite different. Cucumber needs a higher ratio of N and a relatively lower ratio 'of Ca, Mg and S; on the contrary, tomato needs a higher ratio of Ca, Mg, S and a relatively lower ratio of N. The nutrient demands of sweet pepper are intermediate between cucumber and tomato. With the growth of the crops, the amount and concentration ofthe nutrient solution supplied also need to be increased of or tomato, the nutrient formula alsoneeds to be adjusted at different growth stages. The most important factor affecting the water supply amount is light intensity, the irrigation amount can be determined by the light intensity and the EC value of drain water from the substrate. The nutrient formula also couldbe adjusted by analyzing various nutrients contained in drain water. The temperature and pHof the rhizosphere are also factors affecting the nutrient status of crops.
