The cotton red spider is one of the most important cotton pests inChina. The specimens collected from Hopei and Shensi Provinces wereidentified as Tetranychus bimaculatus Harvey. This paper deals with a preliminary report based upon the studiescarried out in Peking and other parts of North China in 1951 and 1952. Itwas found that the adult female of this mite hibernates in winter timein the soil crevices around its host plants. It comes out from the soiland migrates to the host leaves as early as March 3 in the suburb ofPeking. A few days later, eggs are deposited on the underside of thehost leaves. The mites made their first appearance on cotton by March 12in southern part of Hopei and May 19 in Peking in 1951, when thecotton plant bears only two cotyledons. Since the mites attacking cottonseedlings are from other host plants growing on the sides of cotton field,so the border rows of cotton are usually first to be attacked. The injurymade by the cotton red spiders becomes severe usually in June and Julywhen the weather in hot and dry. However, rainfall often checksthe pest population to a certain degree. Field observations madein two different localities in June 12 and July 17, 1952 have shown thatthe mite can migrate from plant to plant with a speed 7-20 meter per week. Special attention was paid to the host plants of the cotton red spiderand a total of 91 species of wild plants and field crops belonging to 30different families has been collected. The more important spring hosts in North China are Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) Libosch., Marrubinmincisum Bth., Convolvulus chinensis Ker-Gawler, Calystegia hederaceaWall., Viola Patrini DC., and Ixeris chinensis Nakai subsp. versicolorKitam. These plants generally grow around the cotton field. Ten species of natural enemies have been found. They are ladybeetles, thrips, bugs, lacewings and predaceous mites. Based upon the studies of these two year, the following combatingmeasures are suggested. 1. Removal of spring host plants is considered as the foundamentalway to prevent the cotton red spiders from attacking cotton. 2. Beans and sesames are the favored hosts of the cotton redspider. They should not be planted in or near the cotton field.
