Piglet coccidiosis is a parasitic protozoan disease caused by Isospora(Cystoisospora) suis, which can cause severe diarrhea and even death in piglets, the morbidity can be as high as 50%-75%,and the mortality is as high as 75%,it leads to considerable economic losses to the swine industry worldwide. In the present, the control of piglet coccidiosis is accomplished by synthetic chemical drug with toltrazuril which is highly effective. However, the emerging problems of anticoccidial resistance and drug residue are of concern regarding piglet coccidiosis, and it is an urgent need to develop new and effective drugs, vaccines or other alternative intervention strategies. This article reviewed the life cycle, genomics, immunity and interactions with other microorganisms in I.suis,in order to provide guidance for the prevention and control of coccidiosis in piglets.
