Eleetropliysiological investigations showed that the male antennae of purple stem borer moth (Sesamia inferens) produced high eleetroantennograni (EAG) responses to Z11-liexadec,enyl acetate (Z11-16 :Ac) and Z11-hexadeeenol (Z11-16 :OH) while Z11-hexa-decenal (Z11-16 :Ald), E11-hexadecenyl acetate, Z9-tetradecenyl aceate (Z9-14:Ac) and Z7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:Ac) would induce lower EAG responses as compared with Z11-16 :Ac and Z11-16 :OH. Z11-16 :OH elicited response with threshold significantly lower than Z11-16:Ac and the results indicated that these two compounds might have different olfactory receptors. Combination of these two compounds in different proportions was tested for the attraction to the male moths in the field, and Zll-16 :Ac and Z11-16 :OH in 9:1, 8:1 and 5:5 ware found more potent than Zll-16 :Ac used alone, Z9-14 :Ac stowed inhibitory effect when mixed with Zll-16 :Ac and Zll-16 :OH in the field test for attraction of the male moths. The results of laboratory investigations and field tests suggest that Z11-16 :OH is the sex attactant or its component of the purple stem moths.
