To evaluate the effects of different isobutyrate concentrations on ruminal pH,NH_3-N,VFA,nutrients degradability and purine derivatives of urine, four Simmental steers(average BW 420 kg,aged 2.5 years) cannulated in the rumen consuming a corn straw diet were used in a 4×4 Latin square design and supplemented with four concentrations(0,0.02,0.04 and 0.06 g/(kgW·d)) of supplemental isobutyrate. The results showed that ruminal pH was not affected(P>0.05).The NH_3-N concentrations of 0.04 g/(kgW·d) and 0.06 g/(kgW·d) groups were lower than those of control and 0.02 g/(kgW·d) groups significantly(P<0.05).Soybean DM,OM and CP degradability were affected by isobutyrate supplementation with 0.02 g/(kgW·d)(P<0.05).The degradability of DM,OM, NDF and ADF of corn straw supplemented with 0.02 g/(kgW·d) were increased significantly(P<0.05).Ruminal actate,acetate/propionate,TVFA and purine derivatives of urine concentrations were increased significantly(P<0.05) by isobutyrate supplementation with 0.04 g/(kgW·d).The supplementation of isobutyrate had passive effect on rumen fermentation. The optimum isobutyrate supplemented dose was 0.04 g/(kgW·d).
